Kenny Karlsson's competencies match the municipality's strategy

Kenny Karlsson holds an MSc in IT (Digitalisation and Application Development), and as an RPA developer helps automate routine work tasks for his colleagues in Roskilde Municipality. He can apply the technical and methodological skills from his education directly in his daily work.

According to Kenny Karlsson, when working with RPA (Robotic Process Automation) it is important to be able to do a little bit of everything:

− Roskilde Municipality chose to let the RPA developer handle the entire process from mapping current administrative work procedures to designing new automated work procedures as well as selecting the technical tools best suited to a concrete solution. It’s an ideal way of working for me, and it’s also the way of working that I am well-equipped for with my MSc in IT (Digitalisation and Application Development).

Through the programme’s individual courses and the many practical projects, he gained technical skills in areas like programming languages and databases. In addition, the programme also provides competencies in methods of software development and project implementation.

− I wrote my Master's thesis on RPA and related development methods based on the principles of Agile development. I have actually been able to apply this directly in my work, as I have helped develop the methods used in the RPA team, he says.

Combination of competencies

Kenny Karlsson's MSc in IT builds on his professional bachelor’s degree in bioanalytical diagnostics, and during his education he worked as a student assistant in Denmark’s Agency for Governmental Administration. According to Rune Stæhr, Senior Consultant and Team Leader, Digitalisation, Roskilde Municipality, this combination of skills and experience was a main reason for hiring him:

The background for choosing Kenny as RPA developer was his high motivation and interest in automation and utilization of robotics software combined with the theoretical and practical experience that he had acquired through his Master's thesis at AAU and his student assistant role in the Agency for Governmental Administration.

Central to the strategy

According to Rune Stæhr, the competencies that Kenny Karlsson acquired through his studies have given him a good ballast and the necessary technical insight to be able to handle the role as RPA developer – and these competencies have great value for the municipality’s overall strategy:

− Technical skills and especially experience with RPA carry high value in Roskilde Municipality. Automation is an important strategic focus area, and the role of RPA developer is central in this context.

Kenny Karlsson thrives in his work as an RPA developer, but in the long run could see himself in a slightly different role.

− In addition to my university education, I have a middle management education as a sergeant in the armed forces and an interest in management. With the MSc in IT, I’ve also acquired many of the skills needed to become a project manager in IT and digitalisation, for example, he says.
