Intuitive and efficient work procedures for users

As a graduate of Interaction Design, Victor Barsted acquired the skills to ensure efficient usage and a good experience for the many users of Systematic's Columna Cura solution.

Victor Barsted holds an MSc in Interaction Design and works as a User Experience Designer at the IT company Systematic. On a daily basis, he works with the citizen records solution Columna Cura which is used in a large number of Danish municipalities and supports records management for more than 2.5 million Danes.

− Columna Cura's user group is very broad and includes home carers, nurses, social workers and other staff in the social service and health care sector. It is a large system with extensive functionality so my task is to ensure users intuitive and efficient work procedures throughout the system. In short, I must ensure that it is as simple as possible for the users to help citizens with the best possible treatment, explains Victor Barsted.

Along with another User Experience Designer, Victor Barsted circulates among the many development teams working on the solution. When implementing new functionalities, he is involved in the design and development process from start to finish.

− For example, when introducing new methods for looking into a citizen in the social service area, my task is to contribute to the best possible solution through mock-ups, prototypes and design of the user interface – all in close collaboration with the users of the solution, he explains.

Designer for the user world

Victor Barsted’s education provided him with in-depth technical knowledge and competencies in user involvement, development methods, design of user interfaces, and backend and frontend programming – competencies that are well-aligned with Systematic's values and objectives.

For Systematic, it is important to deliver IT solutions that make it easier for users to make crucial decisions in demanding situations. We must be able to understand and design for the users' world, which is one of the reasons why User Experience Designer (UX Designer) is a central role in our projects, says Heidi Pedersen, Vice President, Cura, and adds:

With his education, Victor comes to us with a toolbox in interaction design and usability that are essential elements in the role of the UX Designer and the development process in general. In addition, he completed some interesting projects during his studies where he showed teamwork skills as well as drive and independence which are important qualities in the UX Designer working with domain experts and developers

Valuable to the company

Right from the first job interview, Victor Barsted noticed how much emphasis there is on the user experience in the development processes at Systematic – and he was assured that with his background he has something to contribute:

− I see the role of UX Designer as very valuable for Systematic and other companies developing technology solutions. It’s very much about constantly having the user in focus and ensuring effective and visually appealing solutions – and I definitely have the tools to do this from my programme in Interaction Design.
